How do I make exercise fun?

What’s the most fun way to exercise?

The most fun way for me to exercise is with upbeat music and, if my exercise is being led by an instructor, a high-energy and engaging instructor. Running, dance cardio, and rhythm cycling, in that order, are my favorite forms of exercise.

Let me start with why I love running. I feel free! Free from stressors and feelings of restrictions. My best runs are when I’ve got a dope playlist and I get lost in the music. You might catch me trying to breathlessly sing along out loud or pumping my fist in the air mid-stride. There are other times when I’m more focused on the rhythm of my breath, cadence, and stride. Regardless of the way I run, it’s all about enjoying my time out.

Dance cardio fitness is something I’ve enjoyed since as early as I can remember. Seriously! Growing up, my mother was always doing some sort of Jazzercise video or other home workout video, and I’d eagerly jump in. As long as I could keep up and stay from under her feet, she didn’t mind. Dance cardio combines two of my favorite things in life: music and dance. My preference for instructors is those that are high-energy and smile a lot. Why? Smiles and energy are contagious! When I’m winded and in the red, a big smile and an enthusiastic, “Are you still with me!?” give me that extra push to keep going and reply, “Yeah… let’s do it!” It’s a fun call-and-response effect that happens and it adds to the fun for me. It’s like being at a dance party.

I’m relatively new to rhythm cycling, but it quickly became one of my favorite forms of exercise. Initially, the idea of riding a stationary bike seemed silly. There’s no change of scenery, and you’re just peddling…in silence. Boy, was I wrong. What started out as something I did out of necessity (I was having health issues that didn’t allow for my usual exercise programs) quickly became something I looked forward to doing. After a few YouTube searches I discovered Rhythm Rides and other videos that were like dance cardio…but on a bike! I was able to work up a nasty sweat and get my heart rate up riding to a choreographed routine. Talk about a good time.

I’m much more willing and able to exercise when I’m doing it in a way that brings me excitement and fun. What are pyhsical activities you enjoy that can translate into an exercise program or routine?

    1. They also make the best cheerleaders hahaha When I’m on the stationary bike, maxed out and feeling like I want to quit their little “you can do it mommy!” gives me that extra little push to make it through
