If you’re brainstorming fun and inexpensive, indoor activities with your children, consider camping. Yes, indoor camping! All you really need are sleeping bags, snacks and, if you want to enhance your experience, a tent. The boys had a ball camping at my parent’s house last weekend. Parker had made plans for him and his brother to camp at Grandma and Grandaddy’s house and requested that I pack his sleeping bag. I packed both sleeping bags along with their “Going to Grandma’s” suitcase. They were so excited to show off their sleeping bags that, I’m pretty sure, they forgot Grandma was the one who bought them.
Shortly after I dropped the boys off, they put their plan into action. Parker said to my mother, “Grandma we need to rest upstairs.” That was the cue for, “I’m ready to get in my sleeping bag!” Little did my parents know, their bedroom was about to become the boys’ campsite. Grandma set up a palette of blankets underneath the boys’ sleeping bags in her bedroom and even allowed them to have dinner up there as well. We don’t eat dinner in our bedrooms at home but at Grandma and Grandaddy’s, of course, they get to have a special dinner in their bedroom. At some point, Parker mentioned that they needed a tent. Grandma and Grandaddy couldn’t find their beach tent, so Grandaddy came to the rescue and ran out to the store to buy a new camping tent. Their night was really shaping up to be quite the camping experience! Link and Park looked like they were having so much fun camping in their grandparent’s bedroom. The last picture my mother sent me that night was of her with one grandchild on each side, smiling and laughing in the tent.

Grandparents often go out of their way to make everyday experiences extra special for their grandchildren and that’s exactly what my parents did. One day they may be too old to camp on the floor with the boys; one day the boys will be too old to care about sleeping over at their grandparents’ house. These are special times and memories we all will hold forever. And if, for whatever reason, we don’t, we’ll have this blog post to remember the night the boys went camping in Grandma and Grandaddy’s bedroom.
