Last night before story-time Parker made up this elaborate story about The Thief Lord stealing something of ours and how we had get in the Jeep and find him. If you’re wondering who or what The Thief Lord is, it’s the second to last book we read as a family. I thought it was his story was cute and continued to gas his up like “Yeah! Let’s do it! We’ll drive around the neighborhood and find him!” He even went and politely asked Brian for the Jeep keys. We were on a roll until it was time for bed and he had a complete breakdown. He was upset that we were getting into bed instead of into the Jeep. I felt so bad! Today, I woke up around 5 am, determined to create an adventure and map based on the story Parker created last night.
It’s called WENquest—WEN is a play on the names of the connecting streets in our neighborhood. With a little help from Google Maps and Adobe Illustrator I was able to create a map of our neighborhood to accompany the quest I created.
After eating breakfast and getting ready for the day, I went to look for my “favorite coffee mug?”. I asked Parker and Lincoln to help me find my mug and then we heard a knock at the door. I took my time getting there to give Brian a head start placing the clues throughout the neighborhood. I opened the door and that’s when we discovered a letter from The Thief Lord.
I read it out loud and that, my friends, was how our quest began. After a few moments of panicking, the boys and I went back inside to pack a bag to go find The Thief Lord, my mug and Parker’s missing candy. We rushed downstairs to put on our shoes and there just happened to be a map
waiting for us. We opted to take the stroller since it was warm and sunny. Lincoln hopped in the front seat and off we went. Parker led the way with map in hand. We used our quest to continue practicing our directions, learning about the purpose of maps and continuing on our journey to learning to read. 2.5 miles and 45 minutes later to made it to the “X” on our map. Turns out The Thief Lord was tricky and led us all the way back home! We found my coffee mug in the mailbox.
